With its large selection of trailers, Utility Trailer Sales of Utah Inc. has become one of the largest semitrailer and equipment dealers in the United States. “What really sets us apart is our inventory,” President and COO Justin Deputy says. “We have the resources to invest in new and used inventory that is on the ground ready for sale. Our large facility allows us to stock a significant amount of inventory for customers to shop, at a fair price. Since we have such a large selection and conduct business with integrity and fairness, customers know to consider for all of their semitrailer needs.”

Reflecting on an improving economy in its home state and across the country, business has been good this year. “We are on pace to have a record year,” Deputy says. “Moving forward, we think sales will remain strong … Most people in the trucking industry say the future is bright. There is freight to haul and a shortage of drivers. This keeps rates strong so most trucking companies are making a profit and forecasting next year to be about the same as this year. There might not be a lot of growth but it is projected to be a strong year. We are hoping for more of the same.”

The dealership anticipates selling approximately 2,000 new trailers and 1,000 used trailers this year. It also sells a limited number of terminal tractors.

Family Owned 

Utility Trailer Sales of Utah has been owned and operated by the Deputy family since it was purchased by Justin’s father Mike in 1982. In 1983, Clair Heslop, who currently acts as the company’s chief financial officer, became a partner in the business. Together, they have had a 30-plus year partnership of success and that partnership will continue as Justin and his brother Spencer buy them out of the company over the next several years. 

The dealership consists of two locations in Utah. The Salt Lake City site is a full-service location with parts, service, sales and rentals. There are a total of 20 service bays. The site located at St. George, Utah, is a parts-only location serving southern Utah and Las Vegas. 

Location, Location, Location

A key to the company’s success is its location. Utility Trailer Sales of Utah is located just off I-80, which is the main trucking route hauling food and goods out of California to the rest of the nation. 

“Geographically, Salt Lake City is well-positioned on Interstates 15 and 80,” Deputy explains. “We have a lot of traffic and a lot of freight coming from Southern California ports north into Canada and east into the rest of the nation.”

There is also a sizable trucking sector in Utah with many top trucking firms such as C.R. England, Central Refrigerated Service, Andrus Transportation and Pride Transport located there. Those operations have grown along with Utility Trailer Sales of Utah. For example, 30 years ago many customers were running just a small handful of trucks and today they operate thousands. 

Utility Trailer Sales of Utah’s Salt Lake City site is located on 20 acres with a 40,000-square-foot headquarters building built in 1999. At the time, the lot seemed too large; today, its 450 trailer parking stalls are at near capacity.

The company continues to modernize its facilities as it invests in cutting-edge technology for greater efficiency and success. “The perception of trailer dealers across the country is they are generally not early adapters of technology and are behind the curve,” Deputy says. “There are dealers out there still doing repair orders, invoices and other processes by hand. We feel they are missing out on maximizing their potential by not utilizing today’s available technology.”

Utility Trailer Sales of Utah, on the other hand, is updating its computer inventory application to an online database accessible to the entire team simultaneously and from inside or outside the building. It is also expanding its online sales efforts.

Part of the company’s success is due to its partnership with Utility Trailer Manufacturing Co. It serves as an authorized dealer for the company based in City of Industry, Calif. “They build a great product with the highest value in the industry,” Deputy says. Utility Trailer Sales of Utah’s customer service is also a key driver for growth. “We have great salespeople that take care of our customers. All of our salespeople have a minimum of 10 years experience and our most senior salesmen have over 30 years in the industry,” he says.  

By providing a great work environment plus a good mix and quantity of inventory, Utility Trailer Sales of Utah sets its sales team up for success. “Good salespeople tend to come to us,” Deputy says.  The company supports its sales force by accommodating attendance of industry tradeshows, conferences, manufacturer’s training and through great partnerships with industry vendors that provide ongoing support and training.
